Survivor in Action:
Renee Bennett

In 2005, at the age of 32, Renee was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, stage four. Renee and her family were overcome with shock. Chemotherapy followed, and Renee felt that she was on a horrible rollercoaster ride that was never going to end.

Renee relapsed in February 2007, and began chemotherapy again. She completed her treatment and is now cancer-free. She feels each day brings increased strength on an emotional, physical and spiritual level. In 2007, she signed up to attend Retreat Yourself in Montreal. Upon arrival, she was plagued with uncertainty. She didn't know anyone and was uncertain as to whether she should stay. YACC's then Program Director, Lesley, asked Renee to at least give it a try. The rest is history.

"The weekend was an eye opener. I didn't realize that other people 'got it.' Young Adult Cancer Canada is truly a family of genuine support. The organization was (and is) a blessing for my family and I am truly blessed to be connected to them."

Renee attended the 2007 Survivor Conference, and returned to Retreat Yourself 2008 as a Peer Supporter. Renee is now one of YACC's best supporters. She is a member of our Board of Directors, and Peer Facilitator, in addition to anything else we ask of her. As Renee puts it, "This experience has given me a new voice; an opportunity to communicate my story in the hopes that it will resonate for someone else." Renee is truly a Survivor in Action.
