Healthcare Corporation

It’s me checking in on this potentially sunny Thursday. I just returned home from my first ever meeting with the Consumer Feedback Advisory Committee. I am the patient representative, and I am now sitting on the committee with about 15 other people, who represent various departments and programs within the Healthcare Corp. I was going into the meeting with few expectations as I really had very little info regarding the committee and its function. However I have left very encouraged. Since I stay home now, I decided to get home health care from Partners for Home, check them out.

I think it will be a great place for me to voice my opinions (just what I need, more people to listen to my ranting), but seriously it seems like a great place for me to begin figuring out the bureaucracy of the Healthcare Corp.

A few notes about the meeting that will encourage you. The problems with the Registration System were brought up by several members, without any prompting on my behalf. I then used that lead to warn them that I have specific concerns in that area.

Progress story: If you have spent any time in a hospital room at the Health Sciences Centre you are very aware of the heating problem. It is usually very hot or very cold, not much in between. A couple of weeks ago my Dad discovered the cause of this problem through discussions with a Nurse. It seems that the grill over the vent points in a specific direction, and if replaced, after cleaning for example, improperly it blows air into the room as opposed to at the window. This makes an incredible difference in the maintenance of a constant temperature. My Dad promptly emailed the appropriate person in the maintenance department and believe it or not within a week there was someone around to fix the problem. Taking this incredible story one step further, it was actually brought up in the meeting this morning and efforts are under way to ensure that the problem is fixed permanently in all rooms.

So for all those who believe your comments fall on deaf ears, this is a good example that if you find the right person, your comments can make a difference. Comments were also passed with respect to personnel attitude and communication practices and everything looks very encouraging in that area as well. My comment, that the majority of my difficulty was with the frontline personnel, not the Nurses or Doctors, seems to be a prominent one. I could go on, but the message I want to send is that I have found a great place to participate and will continue in this forum for the foreseeable future.

All other things are going well as my energy continues to climb the ladder, although I must admit it is a struggle to get up at a ‘regular’ time in the morning. It seems to take me a considerable time longer to wake up, which is a change, as I have never minded the mornings.

Take care, and you’ll hear from me again soon.
