Journey to Remission: A Day 28 Day Pass

With my counts moving in the right direction for the third day in a row – save my Potassium which I’m get back to – yesterday, Sunday, I was granted my first day-pass from the hospital since checking in exactly 4 weeks ago. Please try to imagine, not experiencing this heat we’ve been having, not having a view of our nearly daily blue sky – thanks to Janeway construction – and not feeling the wind from the ocean for 28 days. But then imagine experiencing all those things almost instantly, as my Dad and I quickly headed for my favourite of places – Signal Hill – right after leaving hospital. It was spectacular!!

Due to my weight and muscle loss I do need a wheelchair to get out of the hospital, so once we get to the main doors my Dad leaves me to go get the car. Of course I chose to wait outside the doors, and let me tell you, a cleaner, fresher, more relaxing breath of air I have not had in recent memory. And the best part is there was as many of them as I wanted!!!

I managed to stay out of hospital until 7 p.m., at which point I was due back for blood. A fantastic day out, as I helped with the set-up at home.I’ll be moving to my Dad’s after leaving hospital, same set-up as last time I was sick, with a few minor adjustments. I am really fortunate to have such supportive parents and family and I have a great physical set-up when at my Dad’s which allows me to have my own space. (I’ll share pictures shortly).

There’s lots of talk of “discharge” as my counts are moving nicely, however the Doc’s do want me to have a CAT Scan prior to leaving and that may take a couple of days to organize. Either way I hope to be getting day-passes each day that I remain in here, which seems reasonable given my conversation with Dr. Grewal yesterday (he’s one of the Doc’s on the team).

Other good news to report is that Dr. Grewal had a look at my blood “smear” from Saturday, which won’t provide as much information as a bone marrow sample, but the early signs look good as he was unable to see any Leukemia. Another promising sign is that my platelets (you remember the part of blood responsible for clotting cuts), they have started to rise on their own. A Positive sign as the theory is that if my white cells were rising and there was a significant amount of Leukemia present then my body’s ability to produce other healthy cells would be inhibited. No sure sign’s we’ve reached our Remission destination yet, but all these little Positive pieces are comforting to hear.

We will remain day-to-day upstairs, as I see no other approach for my mind right now, but as I adjust you will all be among the first to know. Have a great Monday and you’ll hear from me again.

Always…
Live Life. Love Life.
