NL Govt puts young adult cancer on the agenda

imageToday, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced an initiative that will address young adult cancer in the province.

The report, Gaining Ground: A Provincial Cancer Control Policy Framework for Newfoundland and Labrador, states "The age at which cancer is diagnosed may also dictate the type of supportive services required…The needs of youth/young adults and older adults differ."

The report also reiterates one of our main messages and says, "Young adults and youth with cancer struggle with feelings of isolation and lack of customized care to meet their cancer care needs. It is acknowledged that more needs to be done to understand and meet the needs of children, youth, and their families who are experiencing cancer."

The government is providing $70,000 to Young Adult Cancer Canada to fund an awareness campaign to bring health professionals and cancer survivors up to speed on what is currently available in the province. This campaign will be a major step in putting young adult cancer care on par with child and older adult oncology programs.
