Localife leader

I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in 2002 at the age of 24. After treatment, getting back to “normal” was not easy because I did not know what that was anymore. Once I was feeling like myself again — eight years later — I had a relapse. I was about to begin my undergrad for Therapeutic Recreation at the time, talk about unfortunate timing!

I found YACC soon after that, and I am grateful for it. I attended my first Retreat Yourself in 2013 along with my husband, who has been my biggest supporter. I have also been to the Survivor Conference in 2014, and returned to Retreat Yourself in 2016 as a peer supporter. I am grateful for the support of YACC. It is unfortunate to see the amount of young adults living with cancer, but the support of this community is overwhelmingly great!

It is an honour to give back to this community. It would be my absolute pleasure to provide the same support that I have received. I look forward to connect and spend time with other young adults in our local area.

Hello! My name is Sara, and I’m so thrilled to be a part of Localife! I was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia in 2008 when I was 24-years-old. This was not how my husband and I wanted to spend our time as newlyweds. After two-and-a-half years of treatment and a few months off of chemo, we were completely shocked that we were having baby! We now have two healthy little ones and have a whole new perspective on life.

My first YACC events was Survivor Conference 2011 in Ottawa. I have stayed in touch with some great friends and will be forever thankful that YACC brought these amazing people into my life. There is something so cool about this community of people who truly just get it.

In my spare time I like to — who am I kidding!? With a house full of boys, I don’t have much spare time. But as a family, we like to make the most of each day and just enjoy life! We live on a farm and love being surrounded by horses, chickens, sheep, and goats. I am so looking forward to this adventure with Localife!

We look forward to hearing from you, please don’t hesitate to contact us at localifevancouver@youngadultcancer.ca!
