Roller Coaster Ride

Hi Everyone,

I haven’t sent out any news for a while I guess because it’s been a real ride the past week with highs and lows occurring at the least expected times. Basically Geoff is no at the same level of life support that he was receiving on August 8 or 9. Between those dates it has been a series of advances and declines. Last Thursday, just after I sent an e-mail Geoff was being weaned from some of the sedatives in preparation for allowing him to wake up a bit, and start lessening the life support. By Friday morning he was responsive to touches and question, but of course could not speak due to the respirator tube. Friday he spiked another temperature and contracted another infection in one of his IV tubes. Coincident with that his lung function worsened and he was back on the full range of sedatives and high oxygen support. During the past 36 hours he has made good strides with the amount of respirator support needed and he’s improving on most other organ functions as well.

We are trying to prepare ourselves for the long recuperative process now that Geoff will need, it’s likely measured in months at this point, not weeks, and it’s going to be a whole series of small victories. Geoff is still completely sedated in a drug induced coma and is very comfortable I’m very sure. We are reading all of your notes and e-mail to him and telling him of all the calls and cards. I know he’ll enjoy reviewing all of them again when he’s more awake.

Thanks once again for all of your prayers, help, good wishes, and support. Its really making a big difference to all of us.
