Posted on Mar 09, 2010 - 10:49 PM by DuncanBusy as the Avalon Mall was this past Saturday in St. John’s, some media had a chance to drop by to take it all in. NTV news grabbed some footage,
The folks from the very excellent 99.1 Hits FM dropped by to check out what was happening at the Avalon Mall this past Saturday- and, they snapped a few shots.
The newspaper Snap St. John’s was on hand to grab some shots of the Shave in action, so watch the next issue.
And, VOCM was on hand to grab some audio for the radio, and some photos for the web.

Big thanks to Bell Aliant- in addition to being a supporting sponsor (you may have noticed their logo on the bottom of this website)- they also held a Shave at their office. And, with 19 Shavers, they raised over $10,000. Not too shabby there Bell Aliant- that’s a huge help to send young adults to one of our Retreats. The Telegram was on hand to grab some photos- and even some short video.
Well done Bell Aliant!

Big thanks to the seven brave Shavers at Atlantic Lottery, who shaved this morning at Sound Salon. Together, they raised over $2,600- a big help to Young Adult Cancer Canada, and all the Young Adults we reach with our programs. A special thanks to Head Hunter Jordan Howard, who organized Atlantic Lottery’s Shave.
Well done!

The fine folks at Nalcor Energy raised over $9,000 today at their shave for Young Adult Cancer Canada. They had 8 shavers don their yellow toques this morning. Many thanks to Nancy Hart, Head Hunter.
Great job guys (and girl)!
Posted on Mar 05, 2010 - 08:42 PM by DuncanThis is a year of many firsts for the Shave for the Brave. Today, Mount Pearl Intermediate (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) and Glenmore Christian Academy (Calgary, Alberta) will be shaving together via Skype. They’re hoping to raise $20,000, no small feat- and that money would be huge help to making sure one of our Retreats is a huge success.
Even more exciting is that Mount Pearl Intermediate will be broadcasting their Shave for the Brave live on the web. The action will be getting started 1pm Newfoundland time, (GMT -3.30).

Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) volunteer Krista Gates is amazing, and not just because she volunteers. Danette Dooley from The Telegram recently did an article on her personal story and connection to our cause, and we wanted to share it with you.
If you kept your copy of The Telegram from Saturday, February 27th, 2010, you’ll find the article in the “Society” section on page A9. We thought we’d go into just a bit more detail here.
Krista has been volunteering at various Shave for the Brave, Climb, and other events for YACC for a year now. She is super positive, motivated, organized, friendly… all the wonderful things a charity hopes for in a volunteer, and more! She has gone above and beyond in many instances and we just hope she knows how much we love her and appreciate the time and effort she contributes to our organization and the young adults we serve.
When Krista signed up online for this year’s Shave for the Brave (she’ll be donating 10” of hair for wigs for cancer patients) and wrote a personal message for her donors to read, we learned about another side of Krista’s life.
Krista is 26 years old and has a condition called FAP, or familial adenomatous polyposis. In fact, much of her family has FAP. It is a genetic condition in which polyps can form in the large intestine, bowel and stomach. Often this means removal of the bowel and sometimes rectum. If not removed, some of the polyps have a 100% chance of becoming cancerous.
Because of FAP, Krista has already lost her grandmother and two uncles to cancer. Her other uncle has had a large portion of his large intestine removed, and her aunts are screened for polyps as well but luckily have not required major surgery to date. Her father had the majority of his large intestine removed in 2005 and continues 6 month screenings to check on the polyps which have formed in his stomach. If they turn cancerous, they have been told that he will have to have his stomach removed as well. Krista has a large family of cousins as well who are also affected and are screened regularly.
Krista credits Dr. Jane Green of Memorial University and her genetics team for identifying the gene responsible for FAP. As a result, genetic counsellors have been able to identify members of Krista’s family as well as other families who are gene-positive for FAP. These identified individuals have started an early screening program to detect and remove polyps early in development. Krista acknowledges that the work of Dr. Green and her team have been essential in extending the life of her family members and others who suffer from FAP.
Because of her condition, Krista had her first screening at age 10, starting regular screening by the age of 16. At first she was told that she would only have to have the screening performed every 2- 3 years for the colonoscopy (which looks for polyps in the colon) and every 5 years for the gastroscopy (which looks for signs of polyps in the stomach). In 2008, she was informed that she would have to have the colonoscopy performed every year, and the gastroscopy performed every 2-3 years, provided that no polyps show in the stomach.
On January 29th of this year, Krista’s first 2 polyps were found in her colon, and removed. Since then it has been more difficult for her to talk about it, as she had mentally convinced herself that she would most likely not have to worry about polyps until she was in her 40’s, like her father, if at all. But she did a great job with The Telegram, and we are grateful. Krista hopes that through communicating information about FAP, she will also be able to connect to more young people with the condition.
Because of the need for preventative screening/early detection and a lack of support groups for FAP, Krista has become a huge supporter of YACC. She recognizes the importance of the support network provided through our Survivor Conferences and Retreat Yourself programs, as well as early detection/prevention which is communicated through the ‘Touch Yourself,Trust Yourself’ self exam and ‘We Get It’ DVD programs.
Like many of the young adult cancer survivors we serve, Krista is feeling isolated in her experience. Even though she has family members with FAP, most of them are older members of her family or live outside of the city/province, making communication/support a little more difficult. Krista has just recently connected with another young adult (Roxanne Callahan) who not only has FAP but also has a son that carries the gene as well. Roxanne informed Krista that she had the majority of her large intestine removed before she turned 30 and that her son also suffered from a form of cancer which is tied to FAP when he was just a baby.
Krista is extremely grateful for connecting with this inspiring (and absolutely wonderful) person who has been dealing with the struggles of this condition for over 10 years now. In just a short amount of time Krista has discovered more information on living with FAP than what she could ever find online.
If you are a young person with FAP and would like to connect with Krista or Roxanne, please contact us.

Congratulations, Newfoundland & Labrador Liquor Corporation! Head Hunter Mark Fahey with the NLC hosted a Shave on February 26th at which 5 shavers managed to raise over $1,200 for young adults with cancer!
By raising over $1,000, the NLC has provided Young Adult Cancer Canada with more than enough funds to fully cover a 4-day Retreat Yourself weekend for one young adult.
Thanks for your participation!

Thank you to HB Group Insurance Management Ltd. for holding their first ever Office Shave! Three brave souls went under the clippers on Feb. 26 and shaved their heads to help support young adults with cancer. Love the Canadian pride too!
Approximately $300 was raised and this money goes directly to young adults so that they can attend our retreats, conferences, and other supportive programs for free.
Special mention to Linda Eaton, the Head Hunter (shave organizer) for this event! Well done!
Posted on Mar 02, 2010 - 08:42 PM by BethThe Shave for the Brave is spreading across the country in a big way this year, most notably, the Shave for the Brave in Calgary. And, in Calgary, Mike Lang has put a bit of a spin on the Shave we know and love, the addition of the Mullet Pageant. And, judging from this interview on BT, it looks like it’s been turning a few heads over in Alberta.

Congratulations and THANK YOU to all involved in Beaconsfield Junior High’s Shave this past Wednesday! You were our first School Shave for 2010, and what an AWESOME event you put on.
Huge thanks for all the hard work Head Hunters Lindsay Dwyer (student) and Linda Coates (teacher) did in putting this together – 26 shavers raised an amazing $3,600+ to help support young adults with cancer. Way to go!
Special mention goes out to Laura Whelan who raised more than $1,200 for the cause all on her own, and also to Jane Qi, who cut her long black hair for the FIRST time and went way above and beyond the minimum 10” necessary for a wig, giving a full 24 inches! That might just be the longest YACC Shave hair donation to date!

Posted on Feb 26, 2010 - 03:34 PM by BethThe Shave season is off to a roaring start- the second school shave was just yesterday at Holy Spirit High School. Renee was along to give some background about what Young Adult Cancer Canada’s all about.

Holy Spirit High School has definitely GOT spirit! They held their Shave yesterday with an amazing 33 shavers raising approximately $5,000! Big thank to teacher Carina Jardine, Head Hunter, who made it happen. You guys were a pleasure to work with and attending your event was a blast! Congratulations!
Special thanks to student Andrew, who raised more than $1,100 in pledges to support young adults with cancer. We also thought it was pretty awesome that one other student decided to part with his beautiful blonde bangs (along with the rest of his hair) to help the cause.
But remember, we are shaving FOR the brave – the brave young adults dealing with cancer. Your action of shaving brings you one step closer to part of their experience, and we really appreciate your sacrifice of time, and hair!
Renee Bennett, cancer survivor and Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) board member, had a chance to address the crowd at the school, talking a bit about what YACC does and where the money from the Shave for the Brave goes. Check it out!

The Shave for the Brave is growing like mad and this past Tuesday morning was another exciting first!
Two-time Shave for the Brave participant and last year’s top fund-raising school, Mount Pearl Intermediate in Newfoundland, connected via Skype (internet video call) with Glenmore Christian Academy in Calgary to issue the Shave for the Brave’s first ever Skype Challenge. GCA accepted, and students and teachers from both schools will work together to reach a goal of 150 shaved heads and $20,000 raised for young adults with cancer.
Mount Pearl Intermediate and Glenmore Christian Academy will be holding their Shaves simultaneously on Friday, March 5th – also via Skype! It’s going to be an awesome event - shaving, cheering, music, special presentations, the whole works.
We plan to have the whole thing streaming live online as well as recorded. Keep your eyes peeled for the details, and go support your shaver buddies at both schools to help them reach their combined goals!

Corner Brook’s Shave was the first of many separate scheduled (and still BEING scheduled) community, school, and office Shaves in this province and across the country.

Last year more than 825 shavers raised just under $200,000 which allowed us to provide more supportive and awareness events for young adults with cancer, than we ever have before. Here at YACC, we have established some crazy, record-breaking fundraising goals for the 2010 Shave for the Brave that YOU can help us reach (we just know you can!).
So stop thinking, and start growing that hair! Remember ladies, 10” also counts as a shave… Don’t forget to become a fan of Shave for the Brave on Facebook and tell your friends about the event!

…both our office and the Country!
The picture above illustrates the growth of our largest fundraising event; in pledge sheets. Many of our event participants have begun to raise their funds online since we made this option available, however, there are always those who find it easiest to collect money in person and thus bring in their physical pledge forms when they check-in, the day of the event. You can see how these physical contributions have grown steadily since the event’s inception in 2006!
We thought this was a cool picture, not only because it’s a visual measure of the Shave’s success, but also because this year we are opening up the Shave for the Brave to the entire country! (I guess this means we’ll need a lot more office space to store pledge sheets??)
In the past, Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) has unofficially welcomed individual and group Shaves of all sorts and sizes in different parts of the country, but for the first time, this year, we’re inviting any and all interested schools/businesses/individuals to organize and participate in Shaves in their home towns. Sign up to receive regular Shave for the Brave News updates and stay in the loop!
Of course, the annual St. John’s event will still be taking place (March 6th at the Avalon Mall) so if that’s the event for you, we can’t wait to see you there! Other planned community Shaves include one in Corner Brook and one in Calgary… so far; we know there will be even more to add to the list in the coming weeks!
Don’t forget to visit www.shaveforthebrave.ca as more information becomes available toward the end of January. You can also email (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

~ Be the change you wish to see in the world ~
Gandhi
Although this quote can be used often in the non-profit world – I love what it says. Luckily, in my job, I get to interact daily with individuals whose lives personify this quote. Whether it be my fabulous co-workers, one of our young adult survivor friends, or one of our generous donors – I get to see the good in so many people. Today, I will share the story of one of these wonderful groups of people whose kind and generous actions are admirable and inspirational, and definitely worth sharing.
A couple of months back, I received an email from Nathalie in Edmonton. She shared with me that she had a friend who had been diagnosed with cancer, and was facing one of chemotherapy’s side effects, hair loss. Nathalie reported that her friend was devastated with the prospect of losing her hair, on top of dealing with everything that accompanied her cancer diagnosis. What Nathalie said next particularly struck me, “I want to show her that beauty is not on the outside, but on the inside, and that hair does not make the person.” Now, although this is something that all of us have been told, and even truly believe, few of us take it to the next step. Nathalie then said that she intended to shave her head, and raise money for Young Adult Cancer Canada in the process. She even recruited two other co-workers, François and Bertha, to join her in shaving their heads and raising funds for Young Adult Cancer Canada.
Well, the big day was July 27th and, true to their word, Nathalie, Francois and Bertha shaved their heads. In addition to showing their friend the meaning of true beauty, they also raised over $3,000 for Young Adult Cancer Canada – very impressive indeed! So, on behalf of the Young Adult Cancer Canada team, I extend a world of thanks to Nathalie, François, and Bertha, for their willingness to raise funds to assist young adults with cancer in Canada, for their compassionate support of their friend, and, above all, for their bold act of inspiration.
To everyone who shaved, donated, volunteered, or was otherwise involved with this year’s Shave for the Brave event, we wanted to send out one last THANK YOU! If you were able to attend our Wrap-Up Reception you’ve already seen versions of these videos. If not, here’s your chance! Better late than never, right?

Andrew Edwards grabbed some shots at the Village Shopping Centre Shave for the Brave, see them on Flickr: one, two, three, four.
Yesterday, we incorporated a new event into our Shave for the Brave(SFTB), our Shave for the Brave Thank You reception. It was a way that we could thank all of the shavers and sponsors for their involvement and commitment.
Being new to Young Adult Cancer Canada, and having not been a part of the Shave for the Brave event itself, I could truly see the enthusiasm and feel the energy in the room. The yellow Shave for the Brave hats and the many short, spiky hairstyles were obvious tip offs as to those in the crowd who were this year’s shavers. There were those who shaved with others from their school, those who shaved with fellow employees in their organizations/businesses, as well as those who shaved on their own, in memory or in honor of a friend or loved one. Through the words of Renee Bennett, a survivor and member of the Young Adult Cancer Canada family, those in the crowd were able to put a name and a face to the real reason behind the SFTB, and all of the great things YACC is able to accomplish through the participation and generosity of our shavers, our sponsors, and the community.
As with everything in life, the ability to incorporate a little humor is always important. Local comedian, John Sheehan, certainly took care of that. His comedic perspective on many aspects of life, particularly life here on the Rock, had us laughing out loud! Presentations were made to the school with the highest overall participation, Holy Spirit High School (14% of student body participated in SFTB!), as well as the school that raised the most funds, Mount Pearl Intermediate (over $9000!). Patricia Butler received an award for the most funds raised, over $4,000. Very impressive indeed!
So, if you were there – thanks so much for coming. We hope to have all of you back again to shave, and to celebrate next year. On behalf of everyone here at YACC, our thanks to Beth Cranston, our Communications guru, for pulling it all together. I have big shoes to fill for next year’s event!

Shave for the Brave Honours Top Participants
For Immediate Release
June 8, 2009, St. John’s, NL - On Sunday, June 7, Young Adult Cancer Canada celebrated its most successful Shave for the Brave event to date with a reception to honour top participants in this year’s campaign.
More than 825 participants shaved their heads in this year’s record-breaking fundraiser in support of young adults facing cancer challenges and raised over $191,000 for losing their luscious locks.
“We’re so pleased with our achievements for this year’s Shave for the Brave campaign,” says Geoff Eaton, founder of Young Adult Cancer Canada. “It’s very touching that so many community members came together to show support for the brave young women and men facing cancer challenges. We’re particularly impressed this year by the outstanding contributions of our top participating school-group and individual participants.”
The top participating school award was given to Holy Spirit High School, of Conception Bay South, where 103 students (14 per cent of the entire school body) shaved for the cause. Mount Pearl Intermediate won the plaque for most funds raised by a school - over $9,000. Community member Patricia Butler, of Bauline, received a certificate for top funds raised by an individual - over $4,000. A special thanks goes out to these top participants.
Shave for the Brave began in 2006 and has raised over $422,000 since its inception to support much needed programs for young adult cancer survivors. Young Adult Cancer Canada is committed to building an independent and sustainable cancer resource that provides information, inspiration and support to young adults facing cancer challenges.
