Summer, 2002: Regular Guy

I feel different writing this message, and it is one that I have written in different forms in the past, it’s purpose is to remind you all that I’m a regular guy. For those who know me well, I’m sure you know that, either that or you think I’m a wiener, which is often times more accurate when I’m in my element. But I do feel it is necessary every now and then to say that I am a regular guy.

This past year of my life has been quite unlike any other I’ve ever had, a wild combination of Challenges, both those I chose and those I didn’t, and perhaps the biggest change for me is the fact that my face and voice were put in the public forum in a way that they never had before. For those of you who don’t live in St. John’s, it’s a pretty small city, everyone doesn’t quite know everyone, but the degrees of separation are few. Thus when you put your face in the public those degrees drop an extra notch or two.

That isn’t something I really had a grasp of, the awareness I mean, as for much of the past year I really haven’t been out in the world. The hospital and my house were where I spent the majority of my time, simple things like eating out, or going to the mall, they weren’t part of my life for quite a while, and through the Spring I was still pretty low key and relaxed. I did notice that I was getting more emails, but for the most part I didn’t see the media efforts as I was in hospital, away in Ottawa, or just not tuned into that part of the world. However as the summer has moved in I have gotten a little more active, and I love the activity, and a part of that activity has involved the opportunity to connect with many people who have been connecting with me all along. Some are members of this group, others check out the website, others have seen the articles or interviews in the media. It is a great gift for me to get to connect with those people in person, not only because I’m here at all to be able to connect, but also because it’s a great feeling to know that others care, have concern, and are honestly interested in how I’m progressing.

I have been very pleased to tell those I met that I’m progressing well, slowly but surely, my livers remain high but they are coming down, my strength and stamina suck, but that is to be expected at this point, and rebuilding is a Challenge I know well, I’m up for, and will tackle the way I do all my Challenges… one step at a time, with the love and support of my family and friends, and with as much Positive Attitude as I have in me.

And that leads me back to my purpose… every day in my inbox I get these amazing gifts from people who I know very well and others I have never met, and they tell me about some Positive experience they have had with my writings and sharing of my Challenges. I think about why I’m so blessed to have such amazing support and love from people who I have great, and no direct connection to and my best answer is because I’m a regular guy, who made and continues to make Positive choices to the best of his ability. I have lots of great traits and bad ones too, and I figure that it is the combination of those that you can relate to and connect with on some level that works for you. Just so you know, it works for me too.

Always…
Live Life. Love Life.

Geoff
