Cancer has and continues to have a significant impact on my family. I was looking for a way to get involved with cancer related support efforts for my demographic group and thought no better way in doing so then volunteering my hair for cancer. After the shave Geoff and I kept in touch. I was overwhelmed by his story and his commitment and dedication in support of YACC and most importantly the organizations efforts in supporting young adults suffering from this terrible disease.

My initial involvement was pre-YACC after Geoff was first diagnosed and he was forming RealTime Cancer from his hospital bed and his bedroom at home. Beyond gathering the courage to face his personal challenge, he was fiercely determined to share his cancer journey with other young people. I remember him coming back to high school to practice his first speech with no audience in my classroom. His story, his honesty and his determination to open the dialogue about young adult cancer was inspiring and hopeful. It still is.

I firmly believe in the work YACC does and I wanted to get involved on another level. It is my hope that I am able to help the other board members and Geoff bring the vision they have for the future to fruition.

View profileI recently returned to Ottawa after seven years at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. where I was responsible for the World Bank’s engagement with Canada. Prior to that, I was with the Canadian Embassy in D.C. and with Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa. Much of my work over the years focused on policy development and programming in international development assistance. I also have an ongoing interest in global mental health, which I was able to pursue in some of my work. Now back in Ottawa, I’m devoting my efforts to issues around cancer and mental health/well-being.

I wanted to contribute to something that is particularly meaningful to me. My son was diagnosed with cancer at age 16 and over the years I’ve seen first-hand the ongoing challenges that adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors face. I believe YACC is addressing a real gap in how we care for young patients. It’s a privilege to be part of YACC’s work!

My brother, Gaurav Dua, was diagnosed with AML in 2018. He died at the end of 2019, and during his time at Princess Margaret, he was able to find additional support through YACC. I met Geoff when he came to connect with Gaurav and appreciated his candor. Gaurav was one of my best friends and I’ve seen the challenges that come with facing AML at such a young age. I’d like to be of service and support the YACC community.
I love dragon boating and was part of a team for many years! I enjoy the camaraderie, the training, and the early mornings out on the water.

Our dearest friends' 25-year-old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the first place she turned for support was YACC. At that point I felt it was time to get involved and be part of the organization’s future.
