Survivor Conference 2020 cancellation FAQs

Physical distancing has proven to affect YACC’s face-to-face programs in a real way. After conversations with our partners at CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) and CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (CCMF), we sadly had to come to the conclusion that the Survivor Conference that had been postponed to October 1-5, 2020 will now have to be cancelled. We know that an announcement like that comes with many questions, please read on for more information on what this means:

Here is the information we emailed all registered (and waitlisted) participants regarding our cancellation:

Hello to you all beautiful and resilient community! I hope you are well and keeping safe, while enjoying some connection with people you love.

Physical distancing has proven to affect YACC’s face-to-face programs in a real way. After conversations with our partners at CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB)and CancerCare ManitobaFoundation (CCMF), we sadly had to come to the conclusion that the Survivor Conference that had been postponed to October 1-5, 2020 will now have to be cancelled.

Believe me, this wasn’t an easy decision, but we felt it was the only safe one to make. Our face-to-face events involve so much “sharing” of spaces where physical distancing is just not possible. Shared rooms, shared meeting rooms, bathrooms, buffets, etc. With your safety and health as a priority, we can’t bring 130 people together in October. We know our decision comes at a time where many cities and provinces are slowly “deconfining,” but as we know our wonderful community is also one that often lives with compromised immune systems and other health challenges.

You come first, always. Our contract with the hotel had a deadline for confirmation we just couldn’t push to the last minute. They have been so gracious with us, even if struggling themselves. Hopefully we will get to enjoy a conference there in the future. We are lucky to have an amazing partnership with CCMB and CCMF and an incredible team; we are working on more creative ways to offer you information, connection, and fun times online so stay tuned!

The incredible engagement we’ve received from our Manitoba YACCers, health professionals, friends, and colleagues was overwhelming. The momentum was something we had never seen before. Hope you know that the energy and motivation you gave us has helped us keep going these past few months and shift gears to continue to be here FOR you, no matter what. We are so grateful for everything you have done. I know for a fact that we will meet in person again, and we hope it will be in Manitoba at a conference.

Unfortunately, with the uncertainty that comes with a pandemic of this magnitude, we cannot estimate when or where our next face-to-face Conference will happen. When it does, we will email everyone that is currently on this Survivor Conference registration list/waitlist to give you a heads up. You should also follow us on social media and join our e-news to be sure you are on top of all of our programming. Since COVID-19 has started, we have already launched three new digital programs and we know there is more to come – stay in the loop to make sure you do not miss out on anything!

Because we currently have no idea when the next face-to-face Conference will take place and due to address, treatment, allergy changes, etc. we cannot automatically re-register you for the next event. Once registration is announced we will email everyone on this current list and post in all of our social media accounts and you can then re-apply.

Yes! Since COVID-19 has started, we have already launched THREE new digital programs and we know there is more to come – stay in the loop to make sure you do not miss out on anything by joining our e-news and following our social media.

We appreciate that you paid the registration fee for the event and we have a few options for you:

1. Full donation: You can donate your full registration fee to YACC and receive a tax receipt for it;

2. Partial donation: You can donate a portion of your registration fee to YACC and receive a tax receipt for this portion and a refund for the remainder;

3. Full Refund: you can request a full refund and we will make it happen.

Please follow this link and make your selection. If we do not hear from you by June 30 we will automatically process your full tax receipt and get it to you by the end of July.

Thank you for participating in this year’s Expansion Pack. Money raised through this program helps us to bring more participants to the event. While we know this particular event has been cancelled, YACC is focusing on offering even more programs to the community (we have already launched three new digital programs since March!). Check out Geoff’s blog on YACC’s pivot during this time of pandemic. Our hope is that you allow us to re-allocate your gift to these current and ongoing digital initiatives. If you have any questions on this re-allocation please reach out to us.

We will reach out directly to the individuals that donated to you through our site and explain the situation to them. If they would like a refund, we can process that for them.

If you have booked your travel to Winnipeg yourself, you will need to follow up with the travel company directly to figure out your options. Many airlines and rail companies have been very cooperative during this time and hopefully they will be for you as well. If you need a letter outlining that the event has been cancelled, reach out to [email protected] and she can provide it.

If YACC has booked your flight for you, we will follow up directly with the next steps.
