The inaugural Insight meeting

By Alyssa

On January 19, 2022 the Insight team gathered for the first time. The meeting goals were to get to know each other and share research ideas for the young adult cancer experience above and beyond the treatment experience. After a brief intro from YACC’s executive director Geoff Eaton, we did a roundtable where each member had a chance to talk about their story, their diagnosis, and show a picture that is meaningful for them.  Many of the pictures were a reflection of family, including partners, kids, and fur babies.

Insight team members are a diverse group of individuals! We come from different parts of Canada (including both rural and urban), are at different points in our cancer experiences (ranging from recently diagnosed to long-term survivors), and include voices from the BIPOC community as well as cancer supporters. There are also a range of ages represented. I hope we can be a voice for our community, a community that includes every young adult impacted by cancer in Canada.

Once we completed our round table we talked about the YAC Prime study and where to go from there. We discussed some of the issues that come with survivorship and explored topics for future research. A similar theme emerged: family, especially the cost of pursuing a family post-cancer when fertility is an issue and fertility treatments are not covered by provincial governments. This resonated with the committee during the earlier round table discussion. A few other ideas included the negative impact of toxic positivity, the long term financial cost of cancer, and how to move from just surviving to actually thriving.

It was a great first meeting, a supportive space to share ideas, and I am looking forward to hearing more of what this amazing group of people have to say at our next meeting.
